Fishing about.Hows the fishing where you live. I have been tied up with renovations etc so have not been out for months. This will change. So what have I missed?

Hi Wayland . I bet you place is really coming on by now !
I haven't been fishing for ages either . Got to put that right .
The small trout in the pond began rising on warm days a couple of weeks ago . They are early because it is a sheltered spot but hopefully the lochs in the hills will come to life soon .
That other thread about fly fishing has got me inspired again .

Managed to get out on a mate's boat the other day , in Sigo bay .
Still relatively few mackerel about , compared to last year . The shoals are much smaller and scattered about . This seems to be fairly general from what I read on the SAI site ( see Useful Links ) .
Plenty of pollack between about 1/2 and 2 lb , which we would normally return alive , plus a few better ones up to about 4 1/2 lb . Stomachs completely empty other than one stuffed with pipe fish and another with 3" squid .
All sizes taken on shrimp rig but red-tail jelly worm sorted out the better specimens as usual .
There is a real knack to getting good catches of pollack when other anglers are struggling to do so . I am getting a bit better at it but still get outfished by steve who is in the same boat and using exactly the same tackle and lures . I make no secret of the fact that I copy him -- but still fall short in terms of both number and size . When using jelly worm it is all to do with the length of leader , speed of retrieve and , above all , resisting the temptation to strike when you feel the first gentle plucks at the lure .

I'm going out for a day off Kilmore Quay, Wexford on Sunday. I'll write a report on it next week!

How did you get on greentree ?
I managed to get out for 4 hours the other evening -- same area as before , conditions seemed perfect but it was very quiet , with just a few small pollack for 3 hours . Then a frantic 1/2 hour of mackerel running above slightly better pollack --- then suddenly all quiet again .
I am sure the lack of fish is due to currents which carry a dense layer of mashed up weed . You can sometimes see it on the surface but it more often shows up on the fish finder as a band of clutter between 5 and 15 ft thick some way down beneath the boat . You will only find fish if they have 20 ft or so of clear water beneath the weed . Usually worst a couple of days after a big onshore blow , I think .

Nice one. We didn't get out. There was a mixup on the dates and the trip was cancelled. I popped down to the local beach here in Wicklow and did some spinning for mackeral. None about, just caught a few sandeels....I'll keep watching on the SAI site to see when they are in in my area...

Bref has been up to visit and has given me some really usefull looking lead-heads ( weighted hooks ) . These have anti-snag springy bits at the front . Some of them have the "V" made out of wire , which I have seen before , but others have nylon bristles which can be trimmed to suit . Apparently they are great for bouncing off or pulling thru weed eg for pollack off the reefs . Nice one . That has inspired me to give it a go sometime soon .

I have used those protected hooks on Pike lures in the past. They worked great on floating plugs. Even through blanket weed.
