Distance casting.

Hi. Being all to aware of my own very average attempts I have noticed an improvement since moving to Ireland. Guinness perhaps?. I seem to be casting out of my boots Very Happy . So I was wondering what you lads think of as a good cast and what method you use. My first attempts at a full pendulum sent the beach diving for cover Confused  Now I use just an overhead thump or off the ground swing.*******On reflection I have also put on a stone or two Confused  Which may well be the answer Very Happy

Haha , I thought I was the only person who still used those methods !
Never could get the hang of the fancy techniques ( ie any of the ones that require any degree of physical co-ordination  Laughing  ) .
I find it v difficult to estimate distance over water but used to practice casting on a sports field where I could pace it out . The 11 ft Beachcaster + 3oz weight never gave less than 60 yards but never more than 75 either .
Apart from the crack-offs when I tried switching from f/s to multilier , that is . One went well over 200 yards . I didn't even see where the others ended up Shocked .
( For the uninitiated , 60 yds with an unbaited rig is , er , crap and crack-offs aren't as funny as they sound because they can be bl**dy dangerous ! Not to mention expensive , with all those nice new feathers disappearing over the horizon ) .
Newcomers and people like me who are unlikely to improve needn't be disheartened , tho' , because good fish can still be found very close in Wink .
This can be a very sensitive subject . You didn't actually mention the length of yours .

We are talking about fishing! Yer Very Happy  Well I have an old 12 foot Shakespeare Super cast 200. The 200 being the distance capable of the rod with a 5 oz lead. I did think to take the rod back as a dud, it never did 200yds Very Happy  The most I ever got with a 70 lb leader, light main line and a 4oz lead was 153 yds. With a single hooked terminal rig and bait clip this was dramatically reduced of course. I take your point about FS/multi. I use FS now but did have a go with various Multi for a few years but too many birds nests. The problem with FS I find is that it hurts your trigger finger when giving it large all day. As Blowin says you dont need to cast out of your boots to catch fish. Just beyond the third breaker is where to catch fish. On a fast shelving beach this may only be thirty yards. Do you use bait clips blowin?
