I am desperately looking for an effective and practical deterrent -- not something which involves hanging up tons of dinosaur poo in net bags .
Someone recommended putting plastic milk cartons -- the 2 litre type with a handle -- upside down on a stick . If the stick is reasonably high and thin the cartons do swivel about in an erratic sort of way and make an unusual noise if there is even a gentle breeze . I drew eyes on them for more effect , and a smile so as not to spook the local kids . Surprisingly they don't very often blow away , even in strong wind . Looks promising . Wink

I have heard that knotted rags soaked in "Jays Fluid" and hung around the area helps. Good luck.

What damage are they doin Blowin? I have a friend who is into the deer shooting and he tells me there is a special licence give out for landowners who are suffering because of deer damage (broken fencing etc(although I have never seen a fence damaged by deer)), I think its called a section 42 licence but maybe someone else on the forum can confirm this. If this is the case I cant imagine you will have much trouble getting someone to take up the offer of shooting out of season

Unfortunately the milk cartons didn't work .
Bloomin deer took the tops off the young trees again only a few weeks ago . Didn't get the blueberries this time but I think that is only because the bushes are so short after the last attack you can hardly see them above the grass .
Yes , they do damage fencing ! Not the sheep wire but they knock the top rail off the ranch style .
These are big Red Deer . I don't think a .22 would be anywhere near powerful enough . I have experience of .303 and various other suchlike from my youth -- in a legitimate capacity I should add -- but don't particularly want to own one these days so will try the Jeyes fluid . thanks !
On reflection , the use of Jeyes as a deer deterrent is almost certainly banned under EU legislation , given that you are not even allowed to use is as a moss-killer these days .................. so , my friend , Admin will officially state that you did not recommend it .
And , officially , I won't use it .
But I will shove the empty bottle up the ass of the next deer I catch up there .

We had much less deer damage than we've had in the last two years, but I can't identify which of the following has been responsible:

Hanging white bin liner bags on trees previously damaged in such a way as they blow open in the wind

Hanging strings of old CDs across places on our boundary where I thought the buggers were coming through

Owning an English foxhound that turned up as a worm infested and very sorry looking pup a year ago. He chases and terrorises anything that moves on our 5 acres from the smallest beetle to hares. Haven't seen or heard him chasing deer, but he's seen off any of our neighbours cattle that have strayed in.
