Chanterelle ( edible fungi )Also out in the woods now
I haven't been totally confident about this one until recently because it is commonly described as smelling of apricots but the ones I found didn't . Not to me , at least . At best they smelled very slightly fruity .
There is not much likelihood of mistaking these for anything life-threatening but there is a close look-alike known as the False Chanterelle . The guides commonly describe it as "poisonous" but its main effect is to cause auditory hallucination , which I guess means hearing things but I have no idea what. I don't suppose anyone has any experience ( from eating them by mistake , of course ) ?
Anyway , I found and tried a platefull for the first time the other day. Had a serious moment of doubt when I tested one when it was only partially cooked . It was very bitter and quite astringent despite having had virtually no flavour when I had nibbled a bit raw . However the flavour changed again and was pretty good when they had been fried to a "well done " stage . I don't know whether the flavour-change is normal .
Well worth putting on the table
