Carrot root fly.

What a great idea growing carrots in those blue bins <ref "The big dig">. Perhaps it might be better to grow them in a realy big raised bed. Custom made just for carrots. What do yer think?

yes, absolutely. I've grown them in window boxes before, and also in tubs, and nowadays we grow them mixed in with poppies, but the blue bins are the answer. Just watching them pull out those long, perfect carrots... bliss.

(by the way, anyone watch greenfingers on chanel 6 last night? I love that movie. )

Because of our very dificult clay soil I always grow my carrots in a narrow raised bead or in straw bales.

Carrot root fly can be kept outa it with a teaspoon full of Jayes Fluid per watering can watered on about every couple a months.

Wonderful stuff that Jeyes Fuid but as I am sure Jack was about to point out it is now illegal to use it for gardening purposes over here . I think it is also illegal to recommend its use so we don't do that either .
It was one of quite a few chemicals which had been in everyday use for years but were all withdrawn at the same time . AFAIK there was nothing actually harmful about them --- they simply had not been tested and approved specifically for gardening use .

Might be for the best , I suppose . I mean , if you were to spill Jeyes onto your paving slabs all the moss would be dead and gone in a week . Imagine that !

Trouble with it is it is only wood creosote so the chemical companies can make more money out of the new poisons they make.

You noticed how all the bad diseases that were supposed to be caused by those old products like cancer have reduced soooo much since the likes of Jayes Fluid has been banned.
