Welcome to the 21st century.
Which service provider, what speeds and how much ?

Hello,
We are using Airwire (http://www.airwire.ie/) ..
It's a point of sight access so it's wireless ... no need for Eircom or landline for that .. which is the big difference compare to Skydsl (like Fizzywitch)
and we got the 1,5 Mb package, which works at the specified speed .. same for upload ...
and on top of that it's completly unlimited usage .. no download limits or anything ...
happy days !

Someone told me that you then negotiated a deal whereby the b/band provider would give you all the services for free if you would let them add a couple of plate-sized dishes onto your mast . Sounds too good to be true tho' I know you got it sorted and I only have this cr@ppy eircom landline at @ 28kbs so if you could use your new broadband to explain this to our forum friends that would be great .

Hello,
Sorry to be so late replying.
The company we are using is named Airwire (www.airwire.ie) and is using a technology called "line of sight",
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line-of-sight_propagation
Basically if you don't have a direct vision of the next transmitter, you won't get the signal.
So that's how they can provide broadband to remote users .. ie rural ireland. That just meant that they install a pole on your chimney or wherever, and a receiver on top.
Having given the number to plenty of local people I go fixing Pc's for .. not many can't get it at all ...
so they offered to install a few extra transmitters on our pole, pointing to various directions in order to provide broadband to others .. the range being around 11km if I'm not mistaking ..
and we would basically get broadband free of charge because of that. And if anyone has problems with it or their pc in the locality, they can simply give me a ring and I would go sort it out.
Happy days,
Camile

Maybe of interest to Blowin.

It will work on 3G and e3G formats so you could easily get a signal at your place but will need the dongle close to a window. My daughter uses one in Sligo town and it is quite quick but has download limits.
It is being rolled out nationwide at the moment.

Hi there,
You might wanna check with o2 too ..
A friend of ours as just got sorted with it yesterday, and it seems fast enough ..
He coudn't get it with 3 ...
But eh joy of these things is that you can order them, try them and if it doesn't work you can return it.
So you might be lucky and will join us in the 21st century soon ..
as long as you don't forget to enquire.

It is not so much a case of forgetting but getting sidetracked by other joys of life up in these hills ! Like water refusing to come into the house thru the pipes but insisting on doing so in every other way -- up thru the floor , down thru the ceilings , in the back door . No , I am not joking !
That ^ link looks really interesting but what does the map show ? I guess white means no signal ? No time to check before I have to vacate this pc .

I have been trying to do that for nearly 45 minutes and still haven't got anything except a locked up system . I suspect you need broadband to view it .
Thanks for the other links too

Finally got it ( from the public library pc ) . It certainly does look promising but I don't intend to hold my breath !
I note they say they will make it available to everyone who applies for it ...... but don't tell you how to do that .
I would be eternally grateful if you let me know if you hear of any further developments . We can't get newspapers delivered up here , either !

This might be a useful link too . I haven't studied the site but it appears that they are campiagning to ensure that roll-out actually happens , amongst other things such as price structures .
