Blueberries.I have had some very limited success with the taking of cuttings of Blueberries. Can any of you advise us please. If we were to try and grow them from seed taken from shop bought fruit, would we need to give the seed any special treatment to get them germinated?

blueberries from seedPick and soak some ripe berries, then extract the seed. As blueberry plants need to put on reasonable growth before their first winter, you'd probably have more success by storing the seed over winter and sowing under glass or plastic in early spring, to give them a long first growing season. You could put the seed in a small clear bag of fine peat/sand mix and put the bag in the refrigerator for the winter, or just store in an envelope...
Perhaps sow half the seed immediately and half in spring...you ought to have some success...

OK. Thanks for that. I was wondering if they would need a time in the fridge to trigger them off. Your other point about getting them off to a good start before winter sets in may well be the reason for the cutting failure. I was only able to get two to take out of thirty. These were taken as hard wood cuttings and over wintered outside . Perhaps it dont work with these. I will do as you say and plant half my seed now. Cheers.
