beachcombing findsOK , what is the most interesting thing you have found ?I picked up several good conditioned crab / lobster pots c/w lengths of rope after the last gale . Other than that , a bit of fishing gear , some interesting old agricultural metalwork but far too heavy to lift , and not a lot else . A Sperm Whale was beached in Sligo bay a few months ago . They produce ambergrise . I have never knowingly come across the stuff . Has anyone ever found it ? www.ambergris.co.nz/identification.htm |

there was a whale on the beach in waterford when we lived there, but we got there about two hours after it was removed. still, I think it might have been quite grewsome and smelly, as it was very dead.
The usual bits of drift wood, enough to keep us warm in winter in one house but very little here as there aren't many trees this end of the country. Various crates, bits of rope, footballs, buckets and spades for visiting kids... nothing of value but all fairly useful. |

That is exactly what I am after but can't find in any quantity . On reflection my expectation was yet another incorrect preconcieved idea about what you can / cannot do in this part of the world . Coastline always = driftwood , unless , of course , there is a thousand miles of ocean between you and the next bit of dry land ! Difficult to explain but it is "interesting" , sea-worn , worm-holed bits that I am looking for . Even pallet planks once they have gone like that . They will often look like nothing on their own but when made into eg a wonky frame for a mirror or something they can command a high price at arty crafty places . Well washed , big rooty bits will become very desireable in a couple of years , the way gardening is growing in popularity , IMHO . I would be happy to swap some decent logs for driftwood . |

you'll have ot head south, I guess. the coastline in waterford is littered in it after a good storm, but due to the lack of trees here there's never anything. My mother had taken most of my more interesting bits, and the rest I'm gripping hold of to stop her from nabbing. I know exactly what you mean, I made loads of crafts from it when we walked the dogs on the beach down there nearly every day.
If I find some, I'll grab it for you, but it's not too likely here. |

"Pickings for all". An old West country tradition.  I have never seen a tractor being pushed off the beach before.
