Any doubts i ever had were forgotten when we started keeping pigs.A Gloucester sow had a litter in April she would lie across the door during the cold mornings and not let them out. When the day would warm up she would hunt them out and not let them in,hunting them all in again in the evening.Fascinating to watch.

I would credit them with a fair amount of intelligence , tho in limited fields ( ie can work out and remember a maze but can't do maths ) , together with the ability to empathise or at least pick up on the mood/disress of others .
