any boat anglers out there ?I am sometimes lucky enough to get out in a mate's boat and have had some stunning days fishing off the Sligo / Mayo coast . Do any of you guys do a bit ? If so , where have all the coalies and whiting gone ?

Did I see somewhere that you have your eye on a 16 ft Orkney ? We had a basic model ( not Longliner ) 16 ft with removable cuddy . Great boat . A bit tricky for single hand launch & retrieve but easy for 2 . Very stable even with 3 kids feathering mackerel from the same side . I was sad to part with it ( so I kept the longshaft 8 hp just in case ).
There were just two downsides . No built-in bouyancy . I don't know what the coast is like down your way but I wouldn't risk it here with the slow but big swell over the reefs which come straight up without warning .
The other was hull-speed . You probably know about this but I didn't . There is a simple way to calculate the max speed any boat can go . I don't know the formula but the answer for the boat I had was 7 knots . There wasn't any point in going bigger than 8 hp because any more power would just cause cavitation . And 8 knots is about the speed Sligo bay empties out on a big tide ! Good luck , whatever you go for

Interesting info B. The area that I shall fish is that around the south east coast. Lots of rocks and other interesting stuff to keep me on me toes. It was the Longliner with cuddy that I was looking at. It will have some sort of second fit buoyancy added to it. I also have a long shaft. A British Seagall. I think it only a four HP though. Cheers.

Blowin, that formula for hullspeed only aplies to displacement boats, planing boats are a different kettle of fish,
