amusing animal behaviourI have just been watching the most bizarre fun and games on the field . There are a couple of dozen ewes with lambs up there , together with two mares and two young sows who got out of their pen last night and simply won't go back in . A fairly large but obviously young fox appeared out of the long grass in the middle of the field, leaping up and down chasing a mouse or something . I guess it escaped because the fox got the scatters and started chasing around the field in all directions . Then it started to stalk the lambs who hadn't been bothered by all of this . I really didn't think it would take on a lamb of that size but it ran at the back legs of one them and nearly frightened it to death . It lept about 3 ft in the air , did a huge kick before it landed ---- then chased the feckin fox across the field . I simply couldn't believe it . Then the fox turned and chased the lamb and half the flock joined in . They all rushed about at high speed until they suddenly got bored . The sheep went back to grazing and the fox wandered off . Then it found the two pigs . These aren't huge but GOS at 9 months are very solid and extremely fast on their feet ! Anyway , one of the sows suddenly noticed the fox at close range and took off after it . Then , like with the lamb , the fox chased the pigs but this time they in turn chased the sheep and one of the horses joined in the stampede . At that point the midges got the better of me and I had to get inside .
Seriously , most of that is absolutely true . A bit of poetic licence , perhaps , but the interactions were exactly as I have described them . I wish I had it on camera .
