"ranking" ( the status of members )I've noticed that several of the forums who use the same template as this one like to give their members a "rank" . Until they've made 25 posts they are a " newbie " , 25 - 50 a regular , 50 - 100 a friend , 500 a pain in the proverbial . Something like that anyway . Personally I find this a bit condescending towards the newbies but if it could serve a useful purpose with a few name changes I'll see if I can add it . Any thoughts ?

Fair enough .
You have just been promoted . What would you like to be ?
( I was about to offer you an english title because those are the only ones I know but I think someone who needn't be named would shout at me so you can think up your own if that's ok by you ) .
Happy hoppy

God , I hope this turns into a competition.
Blowin I think the rank should be Major as ther is no such rank in the Irish army, the equivilent is Comandant.
So it's now Comandant Weyland, stand by your veggie beds.....

" Major " .
Not a bad idea but if you put your really pc hat on you will realise that there are a lot of references to " major issues " , major concerns , major much more rude things , and not much about major , er , ( I've forgotten the word for the opposite of disaster ) . So , according to the theory of nominal determinism as in when a person's fate lies in their own name , the holder of that title might consider him/her/itself to have been picked upon ........
Can't we just call him number 5 or something ?

Ah no , not me too . I wonder if there is room for another one in that coal shed wayoutwest mentioned .
Listen , we Centurians ( who have got to stick together ) will shut up if the rest of you lot say something . Anything . Poke a friend and get them to say hello if you would rather stay quiet yourself .

Well I did have to google to check that I had remembered it correctly but I first heard about it years ago , at the time when it was an insult to be referred to as " a Wally " . There was a half-serious discussion on the radio , about the extent to which one's name could influence all sorts of things about your character and life ! Playground bullying , adult smirking , p*sstake on the building site , even patricide if Johny Cash is to be believed . Wasn't Big Daddy, the wrestler , actually christened Shirley Crabtree ?? Definitely something like that , which led him to act the bad guy for years until he got over it . On a more positive note , some names just seem to conjour up an image of .. mystery / macho / authority etc .
And how often have you heard someone say " he looks like a ( name ) ... ?
So altho the whole theory at first seems to be completely off the wall it does seem to make some sense . I don't study it but have a passing interest

Well, in fairness if you did stop to think about it (unlike me at the beginning) it makes perfect sense.
I wonder though if it (nominal determinism) takes into account the perceived effect the individual may feel their name incurrs!!
Interesting alright..
I've got a headache now.
