Seems to me that the problem with most of the popular methods of generating your own power is that the payback period on capital expenditure is well in excess of 15 years .
When I looked into it a while ago one possible exception seemed to be a small device ( ? impellor ? ) which is towed behind sailing boats . Instead of pulling it thru water this could be anchored in a smallish stream with a reasonably strong flow . It wouldn't supply the national grid but would provide a reasonable amount of domestic electricity without the need for expensive battery storage . Has anyone looked into this ?
Downsides ( eg getting blocked by debris from the stream ) ?
