Does anyone have any good advice and/or links to information on native trees? A friend's sister recently moved into a new house with a very big garden and I've offered to buy a couple of trees for her (as my bit towards offsetting my air travel this year). I suppose my first question really has to be "how much to trees cost anyway"? - I assume it depends on where you get them and how mature they are.

Before I go looking though I'd like to find out more about what species of trees are actually native to Ireland and in particular to the Carlow/Wexford area. I'm off to trawl the coillte website now but if anyone has any advice I'd be glad to hear it.

Take a look at the Future Forests site . They supply a native hedging mix , which will give you some idea . Interestingly it includes Sea Buckthorn which no-one has heard of but , for REPS purposes it excludes the common Ash which grows everywhere . Apparently this is not a native . The Romans brought it along with them on their invasion . On that basis I doubt that many of the Irish are native either but I guess you don't get a subsidy for planting them in the hedgerow so that doesn't matter .
Give them a call too . I have just ordered a load of fruit trees from them and they were really helpful in the selection of which varieties would be best suited to this area .
