Was a knittaholic, have great expertise on it but havent picked up a set of needles in about two years.
Where are you close too, I found buying by mail order was always better. Arnotts in Dublin is good (or was, do they still have wool) and the wool shop opposite the mansion house was great.
I hate to say it but now the best selection and price is ebay. And dont misss the knitting and sticthing show in the RDS every Oct/Nov _________________ www.freewebs.com/paisti Knitwear for Children |

My knitting is very poor. I picked up a set of needles to start practicing again though.
I dont usually do mail or online sales, no credit card. Plus I like buying local, even if they are buying from china ^-^;
The advice sounds great for saver people though. |

I only started knitting recently (apart from the obligatory attempt in junior school that is). In Dublin there not much of a choice when it comes to shops. Springwools in Walkinstown seems to be the most-used and I've been told it's the cheapest. But, as I've also been told, yer man can be a bit narky sometimes.
I recently found This is Knit in Blackrock Market. They sell online too. It's run by a mother and daughter team, both lovely, lovely people. They hold classes too so I hope to learn how to do sock in the new year.
The shop opposite the Mansion House has been gone a few years now. I used to pass it on the way to college. It's now a Pink Shirt shop and sandwich place. I don't spend too much time in big shops anymore but I don't remember ever seeing wool in Arnotts. The basement is now a bargain basement, plus gifts and household stuff.
The only other place near here to get wool is the small selection in Hickeys (Henry St., not sure if other Hickeys do) or the Wool Shop in Bray.
My aunt (from Ahascragh in Galway - I may seem to be a Dub through and through but really I'm half culchie!) told me recently that there was nowhere in Galway apart from Hickeys in the city to buy wool because everyone just buys online now. She's the kind of person I envy, never uses a pattern and can knit up an Aran jumper in one or two evenings. Still, I'm proud of my hats and scarves so far. _________________ http://livingthesimplelifeiwant.blogspot.com |

I can recommend
Lena's in Limerick City. Very nice shop.
Anthony Ryan's in Galway City. *** good enough selection and good deals on cheap wool.
Yarn is a fab. new shop in Galway City. In the Bridgemills complex. Amazing stock but quite dear. Extremely helpful woman runs it.
Hickeys is a last resort! ***. Unless they are having a sale.
I am so excited now to check out this shop in Blackrock! It sounds gorgeous.
Hi Roisin , sorry but Admin has edited your original post and inserted those *** ' s . Your comments could very well be valid but best kept off a public forum I think . No offence intended . I have done much worse myself ( as you know ).

Would you have any interest in Alpacca wool ? ( Those hillarious looking mini camels for anyone who doesn't recognise the name ) . There are one or two small-scale producers around here . I think they tend to spin and knit their own but they may be happy to sell a bit .
MOH has recently finished knitting a waistcoat from the undercoat from our dog It looks great and is very fluffy and soft .
He's a Pyrenean Mountain dog BTW . BIG . Barks a lot . Consequently very few visitors , which is the only reason I had the time to set up this forum |

Yes , they look like an irresistable impulse-buy until you know the price And they do not live exclusively on manky old rushes and flags and love to be in bog 24/7 but they do fall over and die . Despite what the breeder might have you believe . Well , the one who wanted to charge me £15K ( fifteen thousand sterling EACH ) did .
In fairness to them they were pedigree stock etc etc and I might have misunderstood but I haven't enquired further . Friends bought some for @ 400 euro and they are certainly not all bad news .
It might be worth starting a new thread for Alpacas . Sorry to be diverting this one . Back to topic .... |

there's a lovely wool shop in Waterford, up just past the cinema on the left as you're going up the hill. Calllend needles and pins or something. The bloke who runs it is fantastic (I was a fairly good customer too )
I'm not great at knitting, just learnt a year ago, but have made a jumper. I have crochetted for 22 years though. I'm trying to give it up because of rheumatics, but I do miss it.
