All coming at once at last !
The Hedgehog is virtually unmistakable because AFIK it is the only fungi you will find in this country which has distinct "spines" beneath the cap . They are in fact soft and can be eaten along with the rest of it .
They are scarce but locally prolific . Once you have identified your first one you will probably be able to spot others from a fair distance as they tend to have an unusually deformed shape . Altho they are an unexceptional white / off-white / yellowish colour they seem to have a dull sort of glow about them . Don't know why but they definitely stand out from other species .
Good solid flesh . Excellent fried but only take the younger specimens if you want to avoid any isk of a slightly bitter after-taste .
Underside of the cap , magnified to show the soft "spines" which give the fungi its name .
