Hi People,

Need some guidance.........................

Moving to Co. Limerick in the near future, to a authentic mud walled, thatched cottage (two-thirds thatch, remainder is slate) complete with open fire, blower, crane, etc, but with modern comforts also. However, it will need an two storey extension to the rear on the slated section.

I would like a contemporary feel to the extension - lot of glass, timber cladding, flat green roof, solar/geo thermal water/heating, etc.

I understand that Limerick County Council Planning may provide some stern resistence.

Has anybody done anything similar, know of anyone who has done, or probably most importantly, know of an architect familiar with such a project.

With thanks. Great site by the way.

Hi Toto,

That's what we did this year .. we had an extension built on our thatched cottage ...

we basically built a shed like building behind the house, 1m away from it and linked them with a flat roof .. but we had to work direclty with the thatch though ...

it's timber frame and we have some evacuated tubes for the hot water (works a treat) ...

we have plenty of natural lights but kept the samee sizee windows and all . to keep that cottagee feel to it ..
