If you are talking about small /domestic scale then the commercially supplied wormeries are a total rip-off imho . You certainly don't need to pay a fortune for the " special" worms . Most of the so-called super-worms are nothing more than ordinary Brandlings aka Tiger Worms . These are the relatively small ( to about 3" ) red and white stripey things which will appear as if by magic in any mature compost heap which has even a little bit of manure in it , also under plant pots and even under eg damp newspaper left on the patio overnight . They are hermaphrodite so don't need a partner in order to reproduce and their population can increase at a phenominal rate if they have a bit of the right food .
I have never actually made one but suspect that the £100 wormery can be constructed from nothing more than a few of those plastic in / out trays you see in the office plus a colony of worms from the bottom of the nearest heap of well rotted chicken sh*ite . I am not sure whether a heap of bull sh*ite would be as productive but you will find that in the same place as the trays so it might be worth a try
